Philanthropy in Challenging Times: The Financial Crisis and the Future of Corporate Philanthropy [1]
The financial meltdown of 2008 not only sent financial institutions, corporations, and Wall Street reeling, it also sent non-profits, foundations, and other charitable institutions worrying about their futures.
According to Steven Lawrence, Senior Director of Research at the Foundation Center, "The scale of the current financial market meltdown and the reach of its impact throughout the United States and globally feels, in many ways, unprecedented. With no clear bottom yet in sight, it can be tempting to conclude that the work of many institutions will be imperiled or, at a minimum, substantially compromised." (Read more [1])
Council on Foundations publishes recommendations for non-profits in light of global challenges [1]
In an open letter to “council members and other leaders in our field,” Ralph Smith, Chair of the Board of the Council on Foundations (COF), and Steve Gunderson, COF President and CEO, outlined three broad recommendations to help philanthropic organizations respond to the urgent and growing “challenges of our time.” (Read more [1])
CSR Asia gives Top 10 issues and recommendations for Asian CSR in the next 10 years [1]
CSR Asia, a social enterprise that provides information, training, research and consultancy services on sustainable business practices in Asia, published a report titled “The Future of CSR: Issues of the Next Decade.” It gives a summary of the Top 10 issues that CSR managers will have to confront in the next 10 years, as well as the action points that will help them address these concerns. Clinton Global Initiative-Asia discusses new solutions for CSR and business, closes with $185 million in new commitments [1]
The first Clinton Global Initiative meeting in Asia, held in Hong Kong in December 2008, brought together 11 former and current heads of state, as well as global leaders in business, economics, education, environment, and philanthropy to “develop and implement workable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.” (Read more [1])

It is easy to feel desperate when our daily fare consists of news of massive lay-offs, plant shutdowns, bankruptcy, and multi-billion stimulus packages. Now that the whole world is preparing itself for much more devastating effects of last year's financial meltdown, we wonder how non-profits will be able to cope when the priority will be, understandably, on keeping economies afloat. On the surface, this seems to be a difficult time for philanthropy and the development sector. (Read more [1])

Last 5 December 2008, Darwin Chen, APPC Board Member and former Chair, and Ailing Zhuang, also an APPC Board Member, both received the All China Outstanding Philanthropy Worker award from the Chinese government at the China Philanthropy Conference held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. APPC ushers in new Chair [1]

At its Board Meeting last November 2008 in Manila, Philippines, the APPC Board of Directors elected Erna Witoelar as its new Chair. Erna is currently a Board Member of the KEHATI Indonesian Biodiversity Foundation in Jakarta. Prior to being Chair, she served as APPC’s Vice Chair. (Read more [1])
