39th Edition - September 2008: Alliance issue out, 2nd Family Philanthropy Workshop, Ramon Magsaysay Award, World Wealth Report

Alliance – new issue published, new website launched, now available in Spanish

The September issue of Alliance will have a special feature looking at international funding and ‘philanthrocapitalism’: New emperor, old clothes? International funding – who’s setting the agenda? Guest editors are Michael Edwards and Olivier Kayser of Ashoka.

The special feature looks at how the characteristics of philanthrocapitalists play out in the international funding arena. In particular, what are the implications for donor control and agenda-setting? These issues are anything but new, argue Barry Knight and Caroline Hartnell in their introductory article, as illustrated by David Hulme’s historical overview of donor control in official aid and Peter Laugharn’s examination of the relationship between the present-day debates and those about proactive vs responsive grantmaking.

The special feature includes a series of articles looking at some developing country organizations that are succeeding in negotiating with northern funders on their own terms – TrustAfrica and the African Women’s Development Fund; the recently established Foundations for Peace network; and SPARC in India. It also has interviews with Wolfgang Hafenmayer of LGT Venture Philanthropy, Alain Merieux of Fondation Merieux, and Alex Pryor of Guayaki exploring relations between philanthropy and business, and an opinion piece by Matthew Bishop.

Other articles in this issue of Alliance include an interview with Luis Ubiñas, new President of the Ford Foundation, and ‘Watchdog or lapdog?’ by Rick Cohen, which considers the challenges facing organizations that monitor foundations. Finally, we have two new regular columns. One will bring investors’ perspectives while the other will offer stories from ‘the grapevine’.

The new issue of Alliance can be read online on our new redeveloped and fully searchable website. It can also be read online in Spanish – free of charge to readers in Latin America and by subscription to readers elsewhere.

Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation hosts international conference on “forging partnerships”, “building sustainability”
On August 29 to 30, 2008, the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation will host Magsaysay laureates, leaders of business, civil society, media, academe, multilateral institutions, and international development assistance organizations for two days of discussions that are expected to yield powerful insights on the conference themes of poverty and inequality, environmental degradation, and social conflict, and trigger partnerships for greater impact.

Dubbed “Changing Asia: Forging Partnerships, Building Sustainability” the conference aims to examine Asia’s challenges regarding poverty, environmental degradation, and social conflict; facilitate a dialogue on how these issues are being addressed; identify how existing solutions can be improved, upscaled, or replicated through concrete partnerships among the conference participants and their respective organizations; and present a collective statement on priority policy actions and practical program actions for implementation by public leaders in Asia.

Former President Corazon C. Aquino, the 1998 Magsaysay Awardee for International Understanding, will deliver the keynote address, while 18 other Magsaysay laureates will be part of the various plenary and breakout discussions. It will held at the Philippine International Convention Center, CCP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Manila, Philippines.
